PLEASE READ: POS/Debit Card Terminal Fraud Incidents

Good Afternoon Broadview Danforth BIA Members,

You may have seen the news reports yesterday that a number of Toronto main street businesses have been targeted for TERMINAL REFUND THEFTS resulting in thousands of dollars stolen through Point of Sale (POS) terminals. These thefts have been executed during the day and in front of employees.

Key Takeaway: If a transaction is declined, ensure your employee is the one to reprogram the transaction on the POS terminal. Never let the customer reprogram the terminal themselves, unless inputting their payment card pin code.

Attached resources for your review and to share with your employees:

  • Toronto Police Services Point of Sale Terminal Theft Brochure
    • Tips on how businesses can protect themselves from terminal theft
  • Urban Baker’s Presentation from Digital Main Street Cybersecurity event
    • Discusses/shows how terminal thefts can be executed (presented by victim of theft in 2024)
If something like this happens to you please make sure that you file an on-line police report.  I've also included our area Crime Prevention Officer, PC Jon Little, in the top address line of this email.  Please feel free to reach out to him if you have questions or need assistance.

Thanks,

Susan
