Need Your Help to Share the Small Business/Landlord Survey Results

Good Afternoon All,

I'm following up on my email from yesterday where we shared the results of the surveys conducted with small business tenants and landlords.

Attached please find the full results for both commercial tenants and commercial landlords. Many of you have asked if you can share the information on your social media platforms - yes you can.  Please take what you need from the attached files.

We are also asking you to share the attached files and the summary listed below with key members of government.  Again, your voices and emails are needed to fight for the rent bailout that is so desperately needed.  May 1st is only 8 days away.

Here are the email addresses that you can use:
Provincial:
Premier Ford:  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria, Ont. Minister of Small Business & Red Tape:  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Here is a summary of the survey findings that you can use in the body of your emails to the government:

Overview

  • The majority of businesses & landlords feel wage subsidy is not helping (i.e a lot are closed or don’t have staff/owners are running)
  • The majority of businesses & landlords feel the $40K loan is not helping – many are still not qualifying as they are so small they don’t have “payroll”
  • Overwhelming call from landlords and business owners for a rent relief bailout
  • Businesses are extremely concerned about the amount of debt they will have when this is done

Tenants/Small Businesses key stats

  • 50% of businesses could not make all of April’s rent
  • 72% of businesses feel they will not make all of May’s rent
  • 61% of businesses indicate they would close down for good within 3 months and 76% within 5 months
  • 62% of businesses indicate wage subsidy does not help (69% w/ neutral responses)
  • Only 38% indicate $40K loan helps (49% w/neutral) vs 45% if it was “no strings” (66% w/ neutral)
  • 84% indicate rent relief would help (92% w/ neutral)

Landlords key stats

  • 74% of landlords did not receive all of April’s rent
  • 82% of landlords feel they will not receive all of May’s rent
  • 78% of landlords indicate wage subsidy does not help (86% w/ neutral responses)
  • Only 18% indicate $40K loan helps (24% w/ neutral) vs 32% if it was “no strings” (52% w/ neutral)
  • 72% indicate rent relief helps (86% with neutral)

This morning Councillor Fletcher and MPP Peter Tabuns hosted a Zoom media conference to discuss these results.  Included in the conference were Philip Kovec from our BIA Board, Ginger Robertson - owner of The Edmund Burke and Off The Hook, and Nathan Hynes - owner of The Auld Spot Pub.  Here is a link to the full media conference:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FulOXC6PR48&feature=youtu.be

As a result of this media conference we have had a good amount of coverage by the media so far today - your emails to government leaders will only strengthen this coverage and the results of this survey.

Thank you so very much for helping once again - I honestly haven't stopped believing in the strength and power of many voices speaking out to make changes happen.

Thank you,
Susan
