April 28/20 Update

Good Afternoon All,

The PM's daily briefing didn't provide any further information on the rent relief program.  May 1st is 3 days away and the challenge of rent payments remains our main concern.  Thank you to those who provided feedback on the rent relief program - I have sent the feedback to MP Julie Dabrusin, MPP Peter Tabuns, and Councillor Fletcher.  If you didn't send in feedback please feel free to do so and I will add it to the file.  During the next 3 days we hope that landlords and tenants will have conversations on how to best manage May and June rents - if a business has to close because they can't make rent then there is an empty storefront with no money coming in and the prospect of renting it out to someone else will be a challenge moving forward given that a full reopening of the city isn't something that will happen immediately.  We've heard from landlords that for many of them they are a small business as well - their small business is the renting out of their property.   We encourage all small business owners (landlords and tenants) to have open and honest discussions on how they can work together to try and make the Emergency Rent Relief program work as an interim solution until we are able to reopen. In the meantime, we are continuing to advocate for enhancements to the program based on your feedback.

Today the PM did speak about the framework to begin the reopening of the economy.  The curve is starting to flatten but.... each province is at a different stage in the flattening of the curve.  So each province will determine how and when they start their own slow, prudent and staged reopening.  Below is a link providing information from Premier Ford - yesterday he announced an overview plan for Ontario but this is an overview NOT a schedule.

Coronavirus: Ontario releases gradual reopening plan, though no dates provided | Globalnews.ca

Thanks,
Susan
