NDP Proposal to Premier Ford

Good Morning All,

It's Monday and the start of week 4 of shut downs.  Over the weekend our NDP MPP Peter Tabuns and his party presented a proposal to the Ford government to provide assistance to small businesses and landlords.  Please note that I've included Peter in the top send line of this email so if you wish to send comments and feedback - you know the drill - hit the "reply all" key.
The proposal is below.
Thanks,
Susan

This past weekend the NDP called on the Ford government to institute a program of assistance to businesses across Ontario.

Small and medium-sized businesses, charities and community-based non-profits should get help from the province, including:

  • A 75 per cent commercial rent subsidy up to $10,000 a month for three months
  • A utility payment freeze
  • A remote-work set up fund, which could help them with things like setting up an online retail operation, or buying laptops and software for staff
  • An auto insurance grace period for taxis and car-sharing drivers, established in partnership with the insurance industry and the Financial Services Regulatory Authority
  • A designated emergency fund for small businesses and entrepreneurs who have faced historic barriers to accessing traditional capital, as proposed by the Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce.

The cost of the Save Main Street plan is estimated to range from $850 million to $1.15 billion.

This is on top of our earlier call to halt commercial and residential evictions for the next 4 months.

I want to thank the businesses and the BIA’s that provided us with information over the past week to help shape this proposal.

Peter Tabuns

MPP
